Keep in mind what the box will weigh after it is loaded. Do not overfill; 40-50# should be the maximum weight per box.
-
Empty spaces in boxes should be filled with crumpled newspaper or bubble wrap to keep things from shifting in transit.
-
Books can be heavy and should be stacked on end in smaller boxes.
-
Label each box after packing, so that the movers will know which room to put it in and to help you to find those which need to be opened first.
-
Remove all breakables from drawers before moving furniture.
-
You may want to hand carry valuables, such as jewelry, important papers, and checkbooks.
-
Pack items that are infrequently used first and unpack them last. Allow plenty of time to pack, as it usually takes longer than expected. Sort things you no longer want, as you pack.
-
Items that are no longer wanted can be donated to charity and you may be eligible for a tax deduction, or sold in a garage sale.
